Dave Lisik is Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Jazz Studies at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee and is active as a composer, arranger, trumpet performer and clinician/adjudicator. Dave completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Composition with a Jazz Emphasis at the University of Memphis.
Dave's portfolio of compositions and arrangements includes 200+ works for jazz orchestra, small jazz groups, wind ensemble, orchestra, electro-acoustic combinations, various chamber groups, and instrumental and vocal soloists. His music has been performed and/or recorded by Marvin Stamm, Luis Bonilla, Bill Mays, Carl Allen, Kirk Whalum, Paul Hanson, Rick Culver, Gary Valente, Max Seigel, the Ron Paley Big Band, the Memphis Jazz Orchestra, University of Memphis Faculty Jazz Quintet, David Spencer, Winnipeg Brass Quintet, UNI Faculty Brass Quintet, University of Northern Iowa Jazz Band One, University of Memphis Jazz Orchestra, Arthur Day Middle School Jazz Band, University of Mary Saxophone Quartet, Freeport Middle School Jazz Band, River East Collegiate Jazz Band, and the University of Manitoba Woodwind Trio.
As a trumpeter, Dave has performed as a member of the Jazz Orchestra of the Delta, Ron Paley Big Band, Memphis Jazz Orchestra, Memphis King Beez, New Memphis Hepcats Jazz Orchestra, Bill Shepherd Big Band, Powerhouse Rhythm and Blues Band, Nightlife Blues Band, and jazz orchestras at the University of Northern Iowa, University of Memphis, University of Mary, and University of Manitoba. His other freelance trumpet work includes the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, Bismarck Symphony Orchestra, the Metropolitan Brass Quintet, and many solo performances including St. Boniface Cathedral and Young United Church. The Dave Lisik Quintet and Runabout Quartet have made many appearances in Memphis (TN), Tunica (MS), Winnipeg (MB), Waterloo-Cedar Falls (IA), and Bismarck-Mandan (ND) including the Jazz Winnipeg Festival, and recent regular dates at Harrah's Casino and Crescent City Restaurant. As well, Dave has received three outstanding soloist awards at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival in Chicago, and two MTNA state composition championships.
From 1998-2003, Dave was Director of Bands at Murdoch MacKay Collegiate in Winnipeg, Canada where his ensembles were awarded 12 Gold ratings at regional music festivals, 2 National Gold Awards and a Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award for H.S. Instrumental Soloist. Murdoch MacKay Jazz Band One released 3 CDs: Ty's First Jordans (2000); Silence (2002); and Close the Lights When You Leave (2003). He received a Master of Music degree in Jazz Pedagogy from the University of Northern Iowa in 1998 and was a performing member of UNI Jazz Band One which included performances at the Montreux and North Sea Jazz Festivals, two CD releases: Games (1998); and Conversations (1997) garnering two of Dr. Herb Wong's IAJE Blue Chip Jazz CD Awards and a Downbeat Magazine Student Music Award for College Big Band.
At the University of Memphis, Dave was Assistant of Jazz Studies, directing Jazz Band II, jazz combos, and teaching undergraduate Jazz Pedagogy, Jazz Ensemble Techniques, Jazz Ear Training, and undergraduate/graduate Jazz History. His principal teachers include Dr. Jack Cooper, Dr. Robert Washut, and Tim Goodwin: Jazz Studies and Composition; James Richens, Dr. Jeremy Beck, and Dr. Jonathan Schwabe: Composition; and Dr. David Spencer, Dr. Randy Grabowski and Dennis Gowen: trumpet.
